Removing Caffeine from Tea

Filed under: For Making Tea, Tea and Health — Teaman @ 6:31 pm

For those of us who love tea but don’t get along well with caffeine, the lack of variety and availability in factory decaffeinated teas can be frustrating.  Fortunately, removing the caffeine (80 to 90 % of it) from tea is very easy.

  • Prepare to make the tea as you normally would.
  • When the water is ready (boiling for black teas, lower for green, oolong or white teas) add just enough water to cover the leaves.
  • Swirl the water and tea around for 20 - 30 seconds and pour off the water
  • Continue making your tea in your usual way.

Caffeine is one of the first chemicals to release, so this short infusion will release 80 - 90 % of the caffeine.  Other nutrients, and, of course, the great taste, take much longer to release.
